Bitumen felt roofs typically need replacing every 10 to 15 years as the overlapping joints dry out, shrink and eventually let water through. Converting to GRP fibreglass at that point means replacing a roof that relies on multiple joints with one that doesn't have any, usually for a similar overall cost once you factor in the shorter lifespan of a re-felt.
What's included
- Full strip-out of the old felt and any redundant fixings
- Inspection and repair of the timber deck once it's exposed
- Upgraded insulation where the existing roof build-up allows it
- New GRP system laid to current specification with matching trims
- Disposal of old felt and waste materials
Signs you might need this
- Your felt roof is more than 10 years old and showing signs of wear
- Joints and laps in the felt have started to lift or split
- You're repeatedly patching the same areas each year
- You want a roof that needs less ongoing maintenance going forward
What happens to the old felt
The existing felt is stripped back completely rather than covered over — laying GRP on top of old felt traps moisture and gives the new roof nothing solid to bond to. Removing it also gives us the chance to check the deck and joists properly, which is usually the point where hidden problems from years of small leaks come to light.
